Knots 101: Double Clinch Knot

The double clinch knot is a widely used fishing knot known for its reliability and simplicity. Anglers often refer to it as the clinch knot or improved clinch knot. This versatile knot is great for securing hooks, swivels, and lures to the fishing line. It’s easy to tie and offers strong holding power, making it a favorite among anglers of all skill levels.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the simple steps of tying the double clinch knot so you can use it confidently on your next fishing trip.

Step 1: Double Loop

Thread your line through the eyelet (or swivel) with a double loop

Step 2: Double Loop

With the leading end, wrap the tag end over the main line

Step 3: Wrap it

Wrap the tag end around the main line above the double loop 5 to 6 times. Make sure that the double loop stays open.

Step 4: Thread it

After you have coiled / wrapped the main line, take the tag end, go under the double loops and through the double loops.

Step 5: Tighten

Pull both the main line and tag end simultaneously slowly. Watch how the gaps close. Depending on which side is tighter, you may need to put either side more than the other.

Tada 🎉🎉 You have a Double Clinch Knot

The Double Clinch Knot is incredibly versatile, perfect for securing swivels, hooks, and lures (although an open loop knot is best for lures). Easy to learn and use, it’s a go-to for anglers of any skill level. In fact, mastering this one knot can cover most of your fishing needs, keeping things simple yet effective.

Tips & Tricks – Let’s make it easier to tie

If you find your double loop closing prematurely or struggling to keep the lines aligned, here are some helpful tips to streamline the knot tying process.

“Fingering the hole”

To prevent the double loop from closing too early, try inserting your middle and ring fingers into the loop. This keeps the loops steady and in position while allowing your index and thumb to handle the next steps with ease.

Pinch both the lines

Although we are using a 4mm paracord, pinching the wrapped main line after you have made one round, makes it much easier to manage the overall process.

The same technique can be applied when attaching a hook, as demonstrated below, where three fingers are utilized to maintain the loop open.

With your newfound knowledge of the double clinch knot, you’re equipped to tackle any fishing challenge with confidence. Remember, practice makes perfect, so take the time to master this essential knot. Whether you’re casting off from the shore or navigating the open waters, the double clinch knot will serve as your steadfast companion, ensuring your terminal tackle remains securely attached and your fishing adventures are filled with success. So, go ahead, tie that knot, and let the fishing adventures begin!
